Troupers find true harmony
MUSICAL duo David Campbell and girlfriend Katie McCarthy are experiencing a year that could only be described as a hit.
The son of iconic rocker Jimmy Barnes is only months away from releasing his much anticipated self-titled album, while partner Katie has just been cast in the musical production of South Pacific, opening in Sydney in July.
The pair met in 2001 to perform in the musical Shout – Campbell played the lead of Johnny O'Keefe – and have since gone on to inspire each other through the vagaries of showbusiness.
"We have a two-week time limit of being apart, then someone has to fly over to meet the other," explained Campbell, 30.
"We did it through the recording of the album, when I was in London and LA and it worked out really well."
Campbell credits McCarthy's ambition and creative passion as being a driving force in realising his dream of releasing an album.
"When we met, Katie just said do it, and as a result I've spent the last two years just focusing on the album which has been quite tough," Campbell said.
"I'd been doing musical theatre for seven years, and Katie inspired me to try something different."
South Pacific, a Rodgers and Hammerstein production, will run from July 22 until the end of September at the Theatre Royal.
