David Campbell - InTheater
He's young, he's hip, he's edgy - all the adjectives one doesn't normally apply to cabaret.. But it's with those very charms that Australian David Campbellhas captivated critics, audiences and the cabaret world.
"It felt right the minute I got here, because of my level of intensity," he says. "Australia's very laid-back. But here, I fit like one of the cogs of a really well-run machine."
With an eclectic repertoire of show tunes plus rock and pop standards, Campbell has racked up sold-out gigs in Eighty Eights and Rainbow and Stars. Also to his credit are a stint in Les Miserables in Sydney, a starring role in the Cameron Mackintosh Hey Mr. Producer gala and even a meeting with the Queen of England. His next engagement is at Joe's Pub this month.
And then there's an engagement of a different sort... Campbell recently popped the question to Aussie actress Natalie Mendoza, whom he met in Les Miz. (She coincidentally, was the lovelorn Eponine to his unattainable Marius. "She died in my arms every night," he quips in his act. "What was I going to do?")
Campbell says he wants to tie the knot as soon as possible, and plans to reside in New York. "I feel very welcome here."
